Therefore, if P0864 appears with charging-system codes such as P2502, P2503, or P2504, the charging system should be investigated as part of the diagnosis.

P0864 itself is primarily an electrical/communication diagnosis.

A worn clutch, damaged gearset, low transmission fluid, or mechanically damaged transmission does not normally explain the basic meaning of P0864.

In other words, P0864 tells you that TCM communication is not performing as expected; it does not, by itself, tell you which component must be replaced.
